Poor Website Performance for UK Gambling Sites

Uptrends publishes Web Site Uptime report for 20 Gambling Sites in United Kingdom

Uptrends, a leading provider of website, server, transaction and SLA monitoring services in the United Kingdom, tested the sites belonging to the UK’s top 20 online gambling companies for availability, errors and performance. The benchmark was conducted over the last 30 days (January 21, 2013 – February 19, 2013) using Uptrends full global monitoring network with over 100 checkpoints. During this period one of Uptrends monitoring stations tried to access the homepage of the sites every 5 minutes.

Below are some of the key findings regarding their website availability:

· The average uptime for the entire group of 20 websites was 99.44%, which indicates that over the monitored time period, each website had an average downtime of 4 hours (240 minutes).

· Of the 20 monitored websites, 11 of them (55%) did not perform well. Their websites only maintain an average uptime between 97.87 to 99.86 percent where 99.90% is the industry standard.

· The website which was the least available during the monitored period is Betfred.com. This website showed a performance uptime rating of 97.87% and was therefore inaccessible for those who wanted to place a bet for 15.1 hours. Second least available is Skybet.com (Uptime 98.30% downtime 12 hours) and Unibet.co.uk (Uptime 98.43%, downtime 11.1 hours). Some other well-known online gambling sites that did not perform well were: 888sport.com (98.66%/9.5 hrs.), PaddyPower.com (98.74%/12.9 hrs.), Bet365.com (99.37%/4.5 hrs.) and Bwin.com (99.62%/2.7 hrs.).

· 9 websites (45%) had a 99.90 % uptime or better, including 3 online gambling websites with an uptime of 100% which is an excellent performance rating. These websites were always available for visitors and (potential) gamblers and named Sportingbet.com; Titanbet.com and WilliamHill.com.

· During the benchmark, a number of 175099 checks have been conducted.

Methodology

Uptrends tested the availability of the front page of each website, at 5 minute intervals, using over 100 global checkpoints. If a website was not able to be reached, a second checkpoint from a different location performed another availability check. If the website was still not available, an error was recorded. During the research period, only the availability of the front page was examined. Scheduled maintenance periods were not factored into these test results. For the period when a website was available, it was registered as uptime. During the period when errors were generated, it was registered as downtime.
