33% of Top United States Web shops are not ready for Holiday Season

Uptrends publishes the Web shop Uptime report for 1640 Top online retailers in United States

With Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday just around the corner, the holiday season represents the biggest opportunity of the year for online retail sales. According to Internet Retailer, retail web sales will increase 12% over last year’s holiday shopping season and is forecasted to provide between $92 and $96 billion in revenue. During the holiday season, it is imperative that your online store has maximum availability.

At Uptrends, a leading provider of website performance and transaction monitoring, we understand this and are committed to helping in optimizing the performance and availability of online stores during the peak holiday season. Based on results from a recent study we conducted, we concluded that many online retailers are experiencing significant amounts of time when their websites are not accessible.

During the period from October, 14th until November 14th (31 days), Uptrends monitored the home pages of 1640 of the most popular e-commerce sites, including the Internet Retailer Top 1000. We conducted the test from over 100 checkpoints worldwide with a monitoring interval period of 5 minutes and checked their availability for visitors and (potential) customers.

Below are some of the key findings regarding their websites’ availability:

  • The average uptime for the entire group of 1640 websites was 99.72%, which indicates that over the monitored time period, each website had an average downtime of 2 hours and 8 minutes.
     
  • The average uptime for the 25 least accessible websites was 92.52%, representing an average downtime of 57 hours and 25 minutes over the monitored 31 days.
     
  • Of the 1640 monitored web shops, 542 of them (33%) did not perform well. Their websites only maintained an average uptime between 53.60 to 99.89 percent. The web shop TotalBedroom.com was the least available during the monitored period with inaccessibility of 356.3 hours, followed by Activasports.com (Uptime 78.25% downtime 167 hours) and pet-source.com (Uptime 89.24%, downtime 89.6 hours). Some other well-known online shops that did not perform well were: ChampionsonDisplay.com (ranked 936 Internet Retailer Top 1000 2012; Uptime 92.68% downtime 56.2 hours), eSportsOnline.com (ranked 616; Uptime 93.70% downtime 48.4 hours), LuluLemon.com (ranked 162, Uptime 97.61% downtime 18.4 hrs.), Sears.com (ranked 8, Uptime 97.92% downtime 16 hrs.), MonkeySports.com (ranked 224, Uptime 98.23% downtime 13.6 hrs.) and VictoriaSecret.com (ranked 19, Uptime 98.69% downtime 10 hrs.).
     
  • 1098 internet stores had a 99.90 % uptime or better, including 411 web shops with an uptime of 100%, which is an excellent performance rating. These websites were always available for visitors and (potential) customers. Examples of the web shops that were always accessible were: Amazon.com, EsteeLauder.com, Ikea.com, RadioShack.com, Shoes.com, Staples.com, ToysRus.com and Vistaprint.com.

Methodology

Uptrends tested the availability of the front page of each website, at 5 minute intervals, using over 100 global checkpoints. If a website was not able to be reached, a second checkpoint from a different location performed another availability check. If the website was still not available, it was defined as an error. During the research period, only the availability of the front page was examined. Scheduled maintenance periods were not factored into these test results. For the period when a website was available, it was registered as uptime. During the period when errors were generated, it was registered as downtime.
