Aid Organization Websites Offer Mixed Results in Aftermath of Haiti’s Disaster
SAN FRANCISCO, January 27, 2010— In the aftermath of last week’s earthquake in Haiti, hundreds of disaster relief organizations are experiencing tremendous amounts of website traffic to collect donations. According to the website monitoring company Uptrends (www.uptrends.com), the majority of the websites are remaining online with little difficulty or downtime. Of the organizations being monitored, 11% have experienced some level of downtime.
In the week-long monitoring of 100 aid organizations, Uptrends reports that 89% of the organizations being watched remained online and available 100% of the time. Most of these organizations include the largest aid organizations in the world, including the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Oxfam America and Unicef.
The 11 organizations who have experienced downtime include Bright Hope International, Adventist Development and Relief Agency, Brother’s Brother Foundation, Childcare Worldwide, Hands on Disaster Response, HelpAge USA, Hope for Haiti, International Orthodox Christian Charities, Save the Children, United Methodist Committee on Relief and the World Food Program.
“Getting assistance to the people in this devastated country is so important and we’re really happy to report that the majority of charitable foundations we’re monitoring have been able to remain online and continue in their online efforts”, said Andrew Stock, Director of North American Operations. “The internet plays such a major role in the success of fund raising campaigns and we can only hope that each of these groups is putting the proper resources in place to ensure 100% uptime for their websites. We will continue monitoring all of the organizations on our list. It is our intention to reach out to the ones that are experiencing issues so they can be made aware in real time whenever their websites are down”, Mr. Stock continued.
Methodology: Using worldwide checkpoints in USA, Canada, UK, the Netherlands, Germany and Australia, Uptrends monitored the availability of 100 of the largest charitable aid organizations in the world who are actively collecting donations to aid survivors and clean up efforts in Haiti. Monitoring was performed on each website every 5 minutes. In cases where the website could not be reached, a second checkpoint performed the availability check. If the website was still not available it was defined as an error. During the research period, Uptrends was not made aware of maintenance periods of the websites. For websites with a specific web page covering the disaster in Haiti, this page was monitored. For all others, Uptrends monitored the home page of the organization only.
