Crunchgear missing in action for CES coverage

SAN FRANCISCO, January 8, 2010— In one of the year’s most important weeks for consumer electronics, the popular industry blog Crunchgear.com was down for nearly two hours, reports the website monitoring company Uptrends (www.uptrends.com).

Ranked as one of the top 50 most popular blogs in the world, Crunchgear.com typically covers news related to technology products and consumer electronics.  At the same time, this week is considered a highly important week for technology and consumer electronics news because this is the week that Las Vegas, Nevada hosts the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the premier venue for the announcement of new technology products.

Crunchgear.com ceased to be available for nearly two hours starting at 7pm Pacific time on January 6, 2010.  Uptrends reports that the errors recorded were all http protocol errors; typically indicating an issue on the webserver.

“With 2500 different companies presenting new products at CES this week, it is a critical time for industry news sites to insure they are available 100% of the time”, said Andrew Stock, Director of North American Operations for Uptrends. ““While Crunchgear was down for about 30 minutes the week before Christmas, I must assume that this week’s downtime of over two hours is probably even more frustrating to the Crunchgear staff.”

Methodology:  Using worldwide checkpoints in the USA, Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany and Australia, Uptrends monitored the availability of Crunchgear.com every 5 minutes.  In cases where the website could not be reached, a second checkpoint performed the availability check. If the website was still not available it was defined as an error. During the research period, Uptrends was not made aware of maintenance periods of the websites. Uptrends monitored only the uptime of the front page of www.crunchgear.com
