SAN FRANCISCO, December 29, 2009—In a yearlong survey of thousands of websites, Uptrends reports that most errors that are viewed by website visitors in 2009 are caused by application errors.
Uptrends has monitored thousands of websites all over the world in 2009. Of all the errors that website visitors saw,  51.3 percent were caused by application errors, 29.1 percent by infrastructure errors and 19.5 percent by DNS errors.

Errors Percentage
Application Errors 51.3%
Infrastructure Errors 29.1%
DNS 19.5%

Of all the applications errors, 47.7% were due to an Http Protocol error, making this the most common cause of all website errors recorded.  Of all infrastructure error, 19.1% were caused because the TCP connection failed.

"Website owners and online shops lose visitors, revenue and potential customers when their websites experience these types of errors because their potential customers and visitors will go somewhere else”, says Andrew Stock, Director of North American Operations for Uptrends. “To prevent this, our website monitoring service monitors websites and alerts the website owner when a site goes down.  We also take an automatic snapshot of the error so the website owner will always see what the website visitors see.  By combining this data with the list of website errors messages we delivered throughout 2009, we noticed that an overwhelming number of website errors were caused by the same issue”.

Methodology:  Using worldwide checkpoints in USA, Canada, UK, the Netherlands, Germany and Australia, Uptrends monitored the availability of thousands of websites in 2009.  In cases where a website cannot be reached, a second checkpoint performed the availability check. If the website was still not available it was defined as an error.
