Facebook has stability issues for several hours today

SAN FRANCISCO, August 31, 2010- For the last twelve hours, Facebook.com has suffered stability issues that have caused the popular online social networking site to be unavailable for users around the world. The global website monitoring company Uptrends (www.uptrends.com) reports that issues began occurring at 9:44 p.m. Pacific time on August 30, 2010 and have continued intermittently for the last twelve hours.

For the last year, Uptrends has visited Facebook.com every five minutes from checkpoints around the world.  When an error is recorded, Uptrends revisits the target site using a different checkpoint in order to verify the error, thereby notating the issue as a ‘confirmed error’.   In the last twelve hours, there have been four different instances where Facebook was inaccessible, even from multiple global monitoring checkpoints.  There were a dozen different brief instances where Facebook was unavailable for such a short time that a subsequent visit from an alternate global checkpoint was successful.

“Facebook has become interwoven with human societies around the globe and  has really taken center stage as a mass communication portal worldwide.  So when it experiences downtime and other errors like we’ve seen over the last twelve hours, it’s certainly big news”, stated Andrew Stock, Director of North American Operations for Uptrends.

At approximately 8:45 a.m. Pacific time today, Facebook posted a notice to the public stating “We've fixed a technical issue that was causing the site to be slow or unavailable for some of you. Access to Facebook should be back to normal.”  However, shortly after this statement was published, Uptrends recorded one more period of downtime that lasted a few minutes.  After this final period of downtime, the website has remained stable.
