33% of UK Web shops are not ready for Holiday Season

In e-Commerce, there is no more important time of the year then the coming months of November and December. The Christmas period provides the biggest opportunity for retail sales. In 2011, Christmas shopping saw strong growth in online shopping for the UK Retailers. British online shoppers spent £68bn in 2011 and signs predict an increase to £77bn during the course of 2012.

Businesses that are prepared for the online holiday rush are likely to be those that see the greatest positive impact to their bottom line. Being prepared – by having a web shop that can handle the increasing traffic and transactions – can mean increased sales as online shoppers shop at ecommerce retailers who best meet their holiday shopping needs.

Uptrends, a leading provider of website, server, transaction and SLA monitoring service in the United Kingdom, has published the results for the website uptimes of the Top 100 online UK retailers to see if they are ready for the holiday shopping season.

During the month October, Uptrends monitored these websites from over 100 checkpoints worldwide and checked their availability for visitors and (potential) customers with a monitoring interval period of 5 minutes.

Below are some of the key findings regarding their website availability:

  • The average uptime for the entire group of 100 websites was 99.67%, which indicates that over the monitored time period, each website had an average downtime of 2 hours and 29 minutes.
  • The average uptime for the 15 least accessible websites was 98.12%, representing an average downtime of 13 hours and 57 minutes over the monitored 31 days.

  • Of the 100 monitored web shops, 33 of them (33%) did not perform well. Their websites only maintain an average uptime between 95.12 to 99.89 percent. The web shop PC World was the least available during the monitored period with inaccessibility of 36.3 hours, followed by Virgin Atlantic (Uptime 95.13% downtime 36.2 hours) and Currys (Uptime 95.19%, downtime 35.8 hours). Some other well-known online shops that not perform well were: Boots (30 hrs.), Toys R Us (12.9 hrs.), Laura Ashley (6.2 hrs.) and Orange Shop (2.9 hrs.).
  • 67 internet stores had a 99.90 % uptime or better, including 35 web shops with an uptime of 100% which is an excellent performance rating. These websites were always available for visitors and (potential) customers. Examples of web shops that were always accessible were: Amazon, Halfords, Ikea, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Zara.

Uptrends considers 99.90% uptime to be the minimum required for web shops. If your online store is not available, the (potential) customer will do their shopping somewhere else which will result in the loss of revenue for your company. By using Uptrends as your monitoring solution, you will be well informed about your websites’ performance and availability. And when it does unexpectedly experience issues, you’ll be alerted at once so that you can take the required action.
