US insurance companies not always assured of website traffic throughput

Uptrends provides the website uptime report for 117 US Insurance Companies

Burlington, August 27, 2012

Uptrends, the global website monitoring service leader, today published the results of a study on the online availability of the top US Insurance companies. During the last 30 days, the websites of 117 US Insurance companies were monitored by a global network of 96 checkpoints. In the study, Uptrends considered a 99.8 % uptime, which is an equivalent of a yearly downtime of 17.5 hours, as the absolute minimum standard. Of the 117 companies examined, 26% of the measured websites failed to reach that goal. We also found, 24 websites had an uptime of 100% which is an excellent website performance rating.

‘During the website monitoring period, Uptrends measured the availability of these websites every 5 minutes externally from the end-user’s perspective, so the information derived is a direct reflection of experience that visitors and (potential) customers had when they visited those websites’ says Jim Jaworski, Director of North America Operations for Uptrends. ‘I’m astonished that so many websites showed poor website performance in a market as competitive as insurance. On the other hand, companies such as American Income Life Insurance Company, Aon plc, Conseco and Pacific Life showed that it is possible to perform well. Those companies had a website uptime performance of 100%. Our mission is to optimize the online performance and reduce costly downtime for our customers and their customers. Uptrends helps our customers put the proper resources in place to prevent website downtime’ Mr. Jaworski stated.

Methodology
Uptrends tested the availability of the front page of each website, at 5 minute intervals, using 96 global checkpoints. If a website was not able to be reached, a second checkpoint from a different location performed another availability check. If the website was still not available, it was defined as an error. During the research period, only the availability of the front page was examined. Scheduled maintenance periods were not factored into these test results. For the period when a website was available, it was registered as uptime. During the period when errors were generated, it was registered as downtime.
