Users of the Uptrends web application are called operators. Each operator has a profile that contains their contact information, personal settings, and other account details. Operators may belong to one or more operator groups, which help organize and manage access across your team. For more information, see Operators and operator groups.
Because operators have different roles and responsibilities, they require different levels of access within the Uptrends web application. For example, administrators need full access to all capabilities and settings, while other operators may only need access to specific monitors or other components. Permissions allow you to control who can view information and who can modify settings, ensuring that each operator has the appropriate level of access for their role.
Uptrends provides two approaches to managing permissions:
- System-wide permissions — permissions that are globally set to individual operators or operator groups.
- Item-based permissions — permissions that can be directly set for a specific item or component. Changes to permissions in one place are reflected in the other related locations. For example, changing a permission to an alert definition affects the monitors that use that alert definition.
Who can manage permissions?
Only operators with administrator rights can change permissions. The operator must be a member of the Administrators operator group, where administrative permissions are enabled by default and are mandatory. For Enterprise accounts, you can set up operator group permissions to give specific permission rights to individual operators and operator groups.
Managing permissions
You can add permissions to individual operators, but we recommend managing them at the operator group level. It is usually easier to add an operator to an operator group that already has the required permissions than to manually add all permissions to an operator.

To grant or revoke operator permissions, do the following:
- Go to Account setup > Operators and groups in the menu. This opens the User management hub.
- Click View all operators to navigate to the Operators configuration overview page.
- Select the operator to add permissions for.
- Go to Permissions.
- Adjust the permissions you wish to assign or revoke.
- Click Save to confirm changes.
Permission types
All permission types are available at the operator and operator group level, unless otherwise mentioned. Some permissions are mandatory. Details can be found in the permission descriptions below.
Basic operator
This permission is added to every new operator by default and is not visible in the operator group settings.
The permission includes the right to log in, view monitors and dashboards.
Only an administrator within an Enterprise subscription plan can grant or revoke this permission. It can be set for individual operators and for groups.
Once this permission is revoked, the operator can only log in and go to a protected status page. No other actions are available.
Administrative permissions
This permission is mandatory for the default Administrators operator group and cannot be assigned to any other operator group or individual operator. To grant administrative rights to operators, add them to the Administrators operator group.
Create alert definitions
If an operator or operator group has this permission, they can create new alert definitions. Note that there is also the related permission Edit alert definition, which is set in the alert definition itself and not for an operator or operator group.
Once you create an alert definition, you automatically receive the Edit alert definition permission for that definition. This ensures that you can modify the alert definition later.
The combination of the Create alert definitions and Edit alert definition permissions also gives you the right to change permissions of the alert definition. This way you can share your own alert definition with other operators.
Administrators have this permission by default.
Create integration
This permission allows you to create integrations. Once you create an integration, you automatically receive the Edit integration permission for that integration. This ensures that you can maintain the integration afterward.
Administrators have this permission by default.
Financial operator
An operator with this permission can place orders, view invoices, and make payments. The operator will be notified about account expiration, reaching the SMS credits limit, and will also receive payment reminders.
It is mandatory to have at least one operator within your Uptrends account with this permission. It is included in the Administrators group’s permissions by default.
Infra access
If you have a subscription to Uptrends Infra, you can give operators access to this product.
Administrators have this permission by default.
Technical contact
This permission is assigned to the operator who should be contacted regarding any technical problems.
It is mandatory to have at least one operator with the Technical contact permission. Additional technical contact permissions may be added and deleted, provided that you always keep at least one operator with this permission.
Manage private locations
Operators who have the Manage private locations permission type can create, delete, or manage existing private locations within the account. To create a private location, operators must have access to at least one monitor group with the Create and delete monitors in group permission. The Manage private locations permission is included in the Administrators group’s permissions by default.
Manage monitor templates
Operators granted the Manage monitor templates permission can manage and apply monitor templates to those monitors within the account to which they have edit rights, without the need for additional administrative rights.
Terraform Hub access
The Terraform Hub enables you to export Terraform resources directly from the Uptrends web application. This includes access to import states for operators, monitors, alert definitions, vaults, and other resources.
With the Terraform Hub access permission, operators and operator groups can access the Terraform Hub page. They can then download import states, provided they have the necessary permissions to manage these resources.
Item-based permissions
The following permissions can be assigned to an item or component, such as monitors, integrations, and other resources:
