Users of the Uptrends web application are called operators. Each operator has a profile that contains their contact information, personal settings, and other account details. Operators may belong to one or more operator groups, which help organize and manage access across your team. For more information, see Operators and operator groups.
Because operators have different roles and responsibilities, they require different levels of access within the Uptrends web application. For example, administrators need full access to all capabilities and settings, while other operators may only need access to specific monitors or other components. Permissions allow you to control who can view information and who can modify settings, ensuring that each operator has the appropriate access for their role.
Manage permissions
Only operators with administrator rights can change permissions. The operator must be a member of the Administrators group, where administrative permissions are enabled by default and are mandatory. For Enterprise accounts, you can set up operator group permissions to give specific permission rights to individual operators and operator groups.
You can assign permissions to individual operators, but we recommend managing them at the operator group level. Adding an operator to a group with the required permissions is simpler than assigning them manually.
To grant or revoke operator permissions, do the following:
- Go to Account setup > Operators and groups in the menu. This opens the User management hub.
- Click View all operators to navigate to the Operators configuration overview page.
- Select the operator to add permissions for.
- Go to Permissions.
- Adjust the permissions you wish to assign or revoke.
- Click Save to confirm changes.
Permission types
Uptrends provides two approaches to managing permissions: System-wide permissions and Item-based permissions.
- System-wide permissions — permissions that can be directly assigned to operators and operator groups.
- Item-based permissions — permissions that can be directly set for a specific item or component. Changes to permissions in one place are reflected in the other related locations. For example, changing a permission to an alert definition affects the monitors that use that alert definition.
Administrators always have access to all permissions, even if those permissions are not explicitly configured.
System-wide permission types
System-wide permissions can be assigned to operators and operator groups. Some permissions are exclusive to the primary account contact, the main administrator of the account, and cannot be transferred or assigned to any individual operators or group.
Other permissions are available to all members of the Administrators group, which includes the primary account contact and any operators granted administrative access. Each permission is described in detail below.

Basic operator
This permission is automatically assigned to every new operator and can be enabled or disabled at the operator level. Operators with this permission can log in to the Uptrends web application and view monitors, monitor results, and dashboards.
Only an administrator on an Enterprise subscription plan can grant or revoke this permission. Once revoked, the operator can only log in and access a protected status page. No other actions are available.
Account administrator
This permission is reserved exclusively for the primary account administrator and cannot be transferred or assigned to any other operator or operator group.
This permission is different from the Administrators group, which consists of operators who have been granted administrative access to the account. To assign administrative rights to an operator, add them to the Administrators group.
Financial operator
Operators with this permission can place orders, view invoices, and make payments. They also receive notifications about account expiration, SMS credit limits, and payment reminders.
This permission must always be assigned to at least one operator in your Uptrends account.
Technical contact
Operators with this permission are the designated contacts in the event of technical problems related to the account.
This permission must always be assigned to at least one operator in your Uptrends account.
Terraform Hub access
Operators with this permission can access the Terraform Hub and export Terraform resources directly from the Uptrends web application, including import states for operators, monitors, alert definitions, vaults, and other resources.
Download of import states is only available for resources the operator already has the necessary permissions to manage.
Receive all ticket notifications
Operators with this permission are notified whenever a support ticket is created or updated on the account, ensuring they receive all follow-up emails on the ticket.
For Enterprise accounts, this permission is assigned to the Administrators group by default and can also be granted to any operator or operator group. For non-Enterprise accounts, this permission is permanently assigned to the account administrator.
Infra access
Operators with this permission can access Uptrends Infra to monitor internal infrastructure such as servers and network devices.
Manage monitor templates
Operators with this permission can manage and apply monitor templates to any monitor they have edit rights for, without requiring additional administrative rights, such as monitor permissions.
Create alert definitions
Operators with this permission can create new alert definitions, and can also edit and manage them. For details on permissions that can be set directly on an alert definition, see Alert definition permissions.
Create integrations
Operators with this permission can create new integrations, and can also edit and manage them. For details on permissions that can be set directly on an alert definition, see Integration permissions.
Create private locations
Operators with this permission can create private locations as well as edit, delete or manage them.
To create a private location, the operator must also have access to at least one monitor group with the Create and delete monitors in group permission.
For details on permissions that can be set directly on a private location, see Private location permissions.
Item-based permissions
While system-wide permissions control how permissions are assigned to individual operators or groups, item-based permissions control what operators or operator groups can do with a specific item, such as a monitor, integration, or alert definition
Monitor permissions
These permissions control who can access data, view settings, edit settings, or create and delete monitors. For details on permissions that can be set directly on a monitor, see Monitor permissions.

Integration permissions
These permissions control who can create, edit, or manage a specific integration. This ensures that only authorized operators or operator groups can configure how monitor alerts are delivered to channels such as email, SMS, or third-party tools. For details on permissions that can be set directly on an integration, see Integration permissions.

Alert definition permissions
These permissions control who can create, edit, or manage alerts. This ensures that you and the assigned team get notified when issues are detected in monitors. For details on permissions that can be set directly on alert definitions, see Alert definition permissions.

Operator and operator group permissions
These permissions control who can access, edit, or manage operators and operator groups. This ensures that only the right users has access to specific configurations, while keeping your Uptrends account organized. For details on permissions that can be set directly on an operator or group, see Operator and operator group permissions.

Private location permissions
These permissions control who can access, edit, and manage private locations. This allows you to monitor internal systems or network infrastructure behind your firewall. For details on permissions that can be set directly on a private location, see Private location permissions.

Vault
These permissions control who can access vault items, which are used to securely store sensitive information such as passwords, API keys, or authentication credentials. This ensures that only authorized users can view or use this information when configuring monitors, alerting integrations, and others. For details on permissions that can be set directly on vault sections, see Vault permissions.

Dashboards
These permissions control who can access, edit, or share custom or public status page dashboards, which helps visualize monitor data and results. For details on permissions that can be set directly on a dashboard, see Sharing a custom dashboard and Setting up public status pages.
