You may have noticed when selecting your checkpoints that we've designated the checkpoints located in China as non-primary. Non-primary checkpoints are checkpoints subject to intermittent availability and possibly reduced bandwidth due to the local Internet infrastructure and government control.

By default, we've chosen to exclude the China checkpoints when you select Asia (see below), but that doesn't mean that we don't want you using them. We've excluded them so that we can make sure that you are aware that these checkpoints are subject to volatile conditions, and that they may adversely affect your uptime and performance reporting when you elect to use them.

The Great Firewall of China

The Chinese government maintains a censorship program that has become known as the "Great Firewall of China" (GFW). The government uses the firewall to filter content by blocking some sites and slowing down others. The blocked and reduced bandwidth content includes social media sites, websites external to China, search engines, web applications, VPNs, and any other content they deem inappropriate or offensive based on social and political leanings.

Reduced availability

Due to fluctuating levels of censorship, there are rare times that our checkpoints located in China become unavailable to us as the government blocks all outside communications. During these times, our system cannot delegate checks to the checkpoints located in China. Once the checkpoints become available to us again, we resume testing from those checkpoints.

I'm only testing within China, but I see tests from other checkpoints. Why?

Although it is important to test from your user's location, if that location becomes unavailable for testing, you still want to know the status of your website or service. Rather than let your site or service go untested during periods of limited or no connectivity to our checkpoints in China, Uptrends will use other checkpoints for testing so that you will capture outages and performance problems that may occur in the meantime. Because of the volatility of the China checkpoints, we recommend that you choose to test from all of the checkpoints in China because Uptrends will expand to include them all if your selected set becomes unavailable.
