London, 8 July 2025: Global API downtime increased by 60% in Q1 2025 compared to Q1 2024, shows new data from web service monitoring provider Uptrends, part of ITRS’ comprehensive observability platform.

The State of API Reliability 2025 report — based on over 2 billion API monitoring checks across 20 industries in Q1 2024 and Q1 2025 — reveals a year-on-year drop in average API uptime from 99.66% to 99.46%, representing a decline of 0.2%. While seemingly modest, this drop translates to an additional 90 minutes of downtime every month — during which e-commerce sites can’t process purchases, mobile apps won’t load, and critical business applications grind to a halt.

Failed APIs can frustrate customer activity and disrupt internal operations, risking lost revenue, reputational damage and end-user dissatisfaction for impacted business. If an API that handles logins fails, for example, users might be unable to sign into an account and make purchases, view reports or communicate.

Key findings include:

  • Fintech leads recovery efforts: 85% of API issues resolved in under 5 minutes, reflecting the industry’s digital-first approach and revenue sensitivity.
  • Long-tail problems persist: Over 2% of incidents still require more than 2 hours to resolve.
  • Strong incident response prevails: Over half of all API issues are resolved in under 5 minutes, showcasing effective recovery capabilities across industries.

To keep pace with growing reliability demands, organisations are taking proactive steps to implement robust monitoring solutions. Over one-third (35%) of firms have now adopted end-to-end API monitoring, which replicates real user journeys and identifies failures across chained APIs — something single-step API monitors can miss.

“APIs are the digital backbone of our economy, powering digital transformation and the AI revolution, but ensuring reliability at scale is challenging,” says Ryan Terpstra, Chief Executive Officer at ITRS. “As adoption of AI and large language models (LLMs) increases, so too does the demand on APIs, which enable real-time access to these exciting technologies. The rising volume of AI-driven API calls and reliance on third-party SaaS companies are key factors placing a strain on uptime and performance. Our findings show just how uneven preparedness is across industries — closing this gap is essential for vendors of these solutions to provide reliable, scalable service to their customers.”
