Cloud-based SNMP monitoring
Uptrends Infra includes full support for SNMP monitoring, so all the data you want is at your fingertips. By continuously collecting data from your devices, you can readily spot trends that would otherwise be hard to detect. The SNMP sensor data—like any other type of sensor in Uptrends Infra—is displayed via dashboards. You can use and customize those dashboards to analyze the behavior of your device. With Uptrends Infra, you will always be ready for the unexpected.
What is SNMP?
SNMP, or Simple Network Management Protocol, is designed for the collection of management data from networked devices. The data can include information on the status of operation, performance data and other metrics specific to the function of a particular device. SNMP, however, is often the only way to retrieve information about the behavior of a device unless one resorts to proprietary vendor software and drivers. Vendor-specific software can be hard to install, though, and usually it lacks the means to actively monitor that data.
Monitor network devices! Master your websites and servers!
Consider an example: Your router or hardware firewall provides a way to inspect network bandwidth usage. That data is usually available through a proprietary webpage incorporated within the router. It is relatively easy to access the data, but it is somewhat more difficult to actively monitor and collect long-term data. It can be quite challenging to detect unexpected conditions such as a sudden increase or decrease in network traffic. Again, your website is in place for a reason: to generate business and serve your customers. Without a way to access and understand the data, of what use is the website?
The majority of today's routers and other networking devices support SNMP, which is why Uptrends Infra's SNMP monitoring tools are so valuable. They extract that data from those routers and devices to give you a wealth of monitoring, reporting and alert capabilities. Even for very finite measurements—such as router CPU and memory usage, device temperature, traffic data per port—Uptrends Ultra's SNMP monitoring is the tool to trust.
Configuring SNMP without programming
A key benefit of the SNMP sensor type is its easy configurability. No programming experience is needed in order set up SNMP-based monitoring and alerts. Simply specify which kind of SNMP data you want to view by entering the appropriate object identifier, or OID. The OIDs are specific to the type and brand of the device, and typically a device will have hundreds of them. Each OID represents a particular metric reported by the device.
A router, for instance, could have a specific OID for the indication of its CPU load or overall network usage. A server OID, on the other hand, might indicate the number of processes that are currently running. With SNMP monitoring, you can even retrieve data on the toner levels or number of printed pages in your printer. With SNMP monitoring at your command, you are omnipresent within your network operation.
The OIDs are determined by the manufacturer of your device, and manufacturers generally publish their OIDs in documentation and library files called MIBs (Management Information Bases). However, various websites allow you to search for your device and browse through the corresponding SNMP information.
An OID consists of a series of number and dot separators. Typically, an OID looks like this: 18.104.22.168.22.214.171.124.0. Once you have the appropriate OID, simply paste it into your sensor settings. From there, you can easily monitor your device with the SNMP tool.
SNMP traps by setting alert conditions
SNMP traps are part of the protocol designed to detect events and unexpected situations based on raw SNMP data. Ordinarily, however, it is necessary to run your own tools or program code in order to respond to those traps. Uptrends Infra is the ideal alternative. With Infra you can easily set threshold values to control the conditions for warnings and errors. When a threshold value is exceeded, our software will generate a warning or error for the device. Then, by using the extensive alert capabilities you can control how quickly you want to be notified. With Uptrends Infra, you can set up SNMP traps without having to do any programming.
