In this lesson you will learn how to add and configure a simple Availability monitor for your website or web service. This is the monitor type that you would use to tell whether your website or web service is up or not – sort of like smoke signals but, y’know, better.

What types of Availability monitors are there?

Uptrends checks four types of websites and web services for availability, each with subtle configuration differences. There are also Advanced Availability monitors, which will be covered in the next lesson.

  • HTTP
An HTTP monitor type checks a website for uptime and availability.

  • HTTPS
An HTTPS monitor type checks a website secured with an SSL Certificate for uptime and availability.

  • Web Service HTTP
A Web Service HTTP monitor type checks a web service for uptime and availability.

  • Web Service HTTPS
A Web Service HTTPS monitor type checks a web service secured with an SSL Certificate for uptime and availability.

How to add and configure an Availability monitor

The following instructions may seem familiar if you’ve read through our “Introduction to Monitors” course, but slightly more focused on the Availability Monitoring monitor type. Pay attention, you’ll be quizzed on it later.

  1. Click the + Add Monitor button within the Monitor dropdown in the Main Menu.

  2. Once the page loads, you will be in the Add Monitor configuration screen. The first thing you should do is add your monitor name, and choose your check frequency.

Note: Your check frequency is how often our 132+ global checkpoints will check in to make sure your website or web service is running.

  3. Then go ahead and choose your monitor type. Select HTTP, HTTPS, Web Service HTTP, or Web Service HTTPS from the Type dropdown menu.

  4. After you have selected your monitor type, enter your URL into the URL entry box, making sure to include the appropriate prefix. (i.e. http:// for the HTTP probe type, https:// for the HTTPS probe type, etc.)

  5. Once you are satisfied with the configuration of your new monitor , click on the Save button. You’ve now added your new Availability Monitoring monitor!

Note: You can also explore other monitor settings within the tabs at the top of the Add Monitor screen.
