Quickstart guide

This guide walks you through the basic steps to get started with Uptrends. You will learn how to create your first monitor, configure alerts so you are notified when issues occur, and share access with your team.

To get started:

  1. Set up a monitor
  2. Set up alerts
  3. Share Uptrends with other team members

Set up a monitor

Monitors are the basic building block in Uptrends. They run checks from multiple checkpoint locations to assess the behavior and performance of your web services. To start monitoring your websites, web services, or APIs, you must first create and configure a monitor.

Uptrends offers a variety of monitor types depending on your use case. You can choose synthetic monitors, such as Uptime, Browser, Transaction, and API monitors. You can also set up Real User Monitoring (RUM) to collect performance data from your website’s visitors.

For synthetic monitors, there are three things you need to do:

  1. Create a monitor.
  2. In the Monitor Editor, configure settings such as check interval, checkpoints, and alert settings.
  3. Click Save to save your changes.

Set up alerts

Once you create a monitor, you need to set up alerting to get notified when issues or something unusual happens on your websites or web services.

Alerts are triggered when your monitors detect an error caused by an issue on your website. What counts as an error depends on the settings you choose in the Monitor Editor. For example, if you set a rule that checks page availability (HTTP status) or page content and that check fails, the monitor detects an error. To receive notifications, you need to configure alert definitions (alert channels) and integrations.

A default alert definition is automatically created and enabled in Uptrends. This lets you receive alerts via email, SMS, and phone when an error occurs in your monitors.

To set up alerts, you need to configure two things:

  1. Set up an alert definition — defines how alerts are escalated depending on the number of errors and how often they occur.

  2. Set up the alert integration (alert channel) — defines how you receive notifications, for example, email, phone, or SMS.

Once you’re done, you’ll receive notifications when errors occur.

Share Uptrends with other team members

Once your monitor is up and running in Uptrends, you can share your monitors with other users.

Uptrends supports different user roles. You can share your Uptrends account with operators (other Uptrends users) or use operator groups to manage permissions or share configurations across teams.
