Overview
SCIM (System for Cross-domain Identity Management) is an industry-standard way to automatically keep user accounts synchronized between your identity provider (IdP), such as Microsoft Entra ID, and applications you use, such as Uptrends.
With SCIM enabled, user and group changes in your IdP are reflected in your Uptrends account. For an overview of SCIM, see the official SCIM documentation.
Use cases
Configuring SCIM in Uptrends allows you to:
- Centralize identity management — manage Uptrends operators and group membership from your identity provider instead of creating and updating them separately in Uptrends. This gives you a single place to manage identities and helps enforce your organization’s identity policies.
- Reduce manual user management — automatically provision, update, and deprovision Uptrends operators based on changes made in your identity provider. This reduces administrative effort and keeps account information up to date.
- Streamline onboarding and offboarding — grant new employees access quickly and automatically remove access when they leave your organization.
Note
For simplified user management, we recommend managing users through IdP groups and syncing those groups to Uptrends rather than managing individual users.
How SCIM works in Uptrends
Uptrends provides a SCIM endpoint URL that your IdP uses to connect with Uptrends. During setup, you create a SCIM service account and use its API key so your IdP can authenticate to the Uptrends SCIM API.
After the connection is configured, your IdP uses these credentials to send user and group changes to Uptrends. When you add, update, or remove users in your IdP, those changes are synced to Uptrends on your IdP’s provisioning schedule. Synced users and groups then appear as operators and operator groups in Uptrends.
SCIM synchronizes user identities and group membership only. You assign permissions to operator groups in the Uptrends web application to control access to monitors, alerts, dashboards, and other capabilities.
Manual operators and SCIM-managed operators can exist in the same Uptrends account. The same applies to manual and SCIM-managed operator groups. Enabling SCIM does not change or remove operators you created manually, unless your IdP later provisions a matching username. In that case, Uptrends adopts the existing operator instead of creating a duplicate.
